Coastal Wall Art: How to Style Beach & Coastal Prints in Any Room
There's a reason coastal wall art never goes out of style. The calm of the ocean, soft sandy neutrals, and that easy, breezy light bring a sense of holiday-at-home to any space, whether you live three streets from the surf or a thousand kilometres inland. The right beach print can make a room feel lighter, larger and more relaxed in an afternoon.
But "coastal" covers a lot of ground, from crisp Hamptons blues to moody ocean photography and warm, sun-bleached boho. In this guide we'll walk through the main coastal styles, how to choose the right pieces for each room, and the simple sizing, framing and hanging rules that make the difference between "beach house" and "beach cliché." Every print mentioned is made to order, with Australian orders hand-framed in our Melbourne workshop.
What is coastal wall art?
Coastal wall art is any artwork inspired by the sea and the shoreline: ocean horizons, beaches and rock pools, sailing and nautical motifs, shells and marine life, and the soft, airy colour palettes that go with them. It sits at the heart of coastal interior design, a decorating style built around natural light, relaxed textures (linen, rattan, weathered timber) and a colour story drawn from sand, sea and sky.
The thing to know is that coastal isn't a single look. It's a family of styles, and picking the one that matches your home is the first step to getting it right.
The 4 main coastal styles (and who each one suits)
Classic / Hamptons coastal. Crisp navy-and-white palettes, sailboats, and bright, clean ocean scenes. It's polished and timeless, perfect for traditional homes, formal living rooms and anyone who loves a "weekend by the water" feel. Pair it with white timber frames or classic black.
Modern coastal. Pared-back, abstract takes on the sea, including minimalist horizons, line-art waves, and muted blues and greys. This is the most versatile coastal look and the easiest to live with in a contemporary apartment. Natural oak frames keep it soft and current.
Nautical. Lighthouses, knots, flags, anchors and vintage maritime prints. Playful and characterful, nautical wall decor is a favourite for kids' rooms, bathrooms and beach houses where you want the theme to read loud and clear.
Beachy boho. Warm, sun-faded tones, surf photography, palms and a more lived-in, relaxed feel. It leans into texture and movement and works beautifully in bedrooms and casual living spaces.
Not sure which is yours? Our Beach & Coastal Art collection spans all four, so you can see the styles side by side.
How to choose coastal art for each room
Living room. This is your anchor space, so go bigger and bolder than feels comfortable, whether that's a single large ocean print or a balanced pair above the sofa. Modern coastal and Hamptons both shine here. Aim for artwork roughly 60 to 75% of the width of your sofa.
Bedroom. Soft, calming pieces work best above the bed, such as hazy horizons, gentle beachy boho tones, or a serene pair of prints. Keep the palette muted so the room stays restful.
Bathroom. Bathrooms are made for coastal. Ocean blues and nautical motifs feel completely at home, and our giclée prints behind glass handle the humidity of a well-ventilated bathroom well. Smaller A4/A3 sizes suit the wall space.
Beach house & holiday homes. Lean in. Layer multiple beach prints, mix photography with illustration, and build a relaxed, collected-over-time feel. Our Beach Wall Art collection is the place to start.
Kitchen, hallway & entryway. A single crisp coastal print or a slim vertical pair adds light and a sense of escape to transitional spaces without crowding them.
Sizing: the rule that matters most
The single most common mistake with wall art is going too small. As a starting point, artwork above a sofa or bed should span 60 to 75% of the furniture's width, and the bottom of the frame should sit roughly 15 to 25 cm above the furniture. When you're between two sizes, always size up. Slightly too big looks confident, while slightly too small looks like an afterthought.

Framing coastal prints
Frame choice quietly sets the style. Natural oak keeps modern coastal and boho looks soft, warm and contemporary. White reinforces a crisp Hamptons or classic beach-house feel. Black adds definition and a gallery-grade edge to bold ocean photography. All of our prints are available framed in sustainable timber with premium glass, or unframed if you have your own frames. Building a coastal gallery wall
If one print won't fill the wall, a coastal gallery wall is a beautiful solution. Mix an ocean horizon, a beach photograph and a smaller nautical or botanical piece, keeping to a shared blue-and-sand palette so it reads as one cohesive set. Two- and three-piece art sets make this easy because the pieces are designed to hang together. For layout templates, spacing and hanging order, follow our Gallery Wall Ideas guide.

Coastal wall art FAQ
What colours work best for coastal wall art? Soft blues, aqua and teal, sandy neutrals, crisp white and warm driftwood tones. For a modern look, keep the palette muted; for classic Hamptons, lean into navy-and-white contrast.
What is coastal interior design? A relaxed decorating style built around natural light, organic textures (linen, rattan, timber) and a sea-and-sand colour palette. Coastal wall art is one of the simplest ways to bring the look into a room without a full renovation.
Where should I hang coastal art? Living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms and beach houses are the naturals, but a single coastal print also lifts hallways, kitchens and home offices. Hang the centre of the artwork at roughly eye level (about 145 to 150 cm from the floor) when there's no furniture beneath it.
Does coastal art only suit homes near the beach? Not at all. Coastal art is one of the most popular ways to make any home, inland apartments included, feel lighter, calmer and more open.
Framed or unframed? Framed prints arrive ready to hang and protected behind glass; unframed prints are more affordable if you already have frames. Choose oak for a soft modern feel, white for classic coastal, or black for bold definition.
Bring the coast home
Coastal wall art is the easiest design shortcut there is: instant calm, light and space, in any room and any home. Start by picking your coastal style, choose a piece sized right for the wall, and frame it to match your interior, then enjoy the holiday feeling every day.
