Widely regarded as the greatest colourist and along with Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define and influence radical contemporary art in the 20th century. His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.

Henri Matisse: The Father of Fauvism

Henri Matisse never planned to pick up a paintbrush, at least not during his professional career. Born in 1869 in Nice, France and originally trained to be a lawyer, Matisse only found his true life’s passion when his mother gifted him a paint set to keep him occupied whilst recovering from appendicitis.

And aren’t we grateful he did, because Matisse’s work led to the rise of the Fauvism art movement, championing vivid and non-naturalistic expressions. Until his death in 1954, Matisse continued to express his curiosity about the world through distorted shapes and colours that can now be enjoyed as Henri Matisse poster prints in living rooms across Australia.
Images of Henri Matisse’s artwork conjure bright colours and fluid shapes as a signature trait of fauvism. Considered one of his finest masterpieces, Matisse’s ‘The Dance’ highlights this impeccably. The twisting human bodies and strong hues serve to capture the childish joy of movement. This sense of freedom was also imbued in his landscapes, such as Open Window and Vue De Collioure, depicting dream-like scenes inspired by Matisse’s travels.

Discover The Vibrant World Of Fauvism Paintings By Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse’s series of green and blue works named ‘The Cut Outs’ depict the human frame in impossibly curved and compelling shapes. His use of a singular tone stands in contrast to his more brightly coloured works, keeping the viewer fully focused on the composition of the body. Our Henri Matisse art prints from this period are sure to make for visually stunning centrepieces in any minimalist interiors.

Matisse was inspired by two other prominent French artists: Picasso and Cézanne. These influences can be seen in his 1907 ‘Blue Nude’, which characterised his proficiency in abstraction too. Today, we may not fully recognise the eye-brow raising elements of this painting that led to its burning in effigy when presented in 1913. However, the female figure’s prominent muscle, sharp lines and harsh, unnatural colouring was a defiant stray from the realism favoured in art schools at the time.
